“I heard this story once about when the Germans were occupying Paris and they had to retreat back. They wired Notre Dame to blow, but they had to leave one guy in charge of hitting the switch. And the guy, the soldier, he couldn’t do it. You know, he just sat there, knocked out by how beautiful the place was. And then when the allied troops came in, they found all the explosives just lying there and the switch unturned...”  —- Jesse, Before Sunset

I am shocked and devastated when I saw the image of Notre Dame Cathedral in flames. It’s hard to imagine one of Europe’s most iconic landmarks to be destroyed by fire, after withstanding centuries of rich history.

It feels even more heartbreaking, having mesmerized by its beauty in person two years ago… and realizing that this lucky chance might never be repeated again in this lifetime.

It would definitely take years and millions of money for this beauty to be rebuilt 🙁

Considered as the jewel of the medieval Gothic architecture, every portion of the cathedral exudes Gothic beauty. From its large colourful glass designs and intricate sculptures to its stone structures, clustered columns and pointed spires, it is so easy to fall in love with this cathedral, regardless if you believe in religion or not.

The stained glass designs are my favorites in this Gothic church. Aside from the stained glass designs, its statues and murals will make you appreciate French Gothic art.

PictureAnd who would forget this cathedral as King Henry VI of England’s and Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte’s coronation place? But perhaps most people would associate this iconic landmark with  Victor Hugo’s Hunchback of Notre Dame.

I’ve been to more than 100 places of worship in Europe but Notre Dame Cathedral is one of the most remarkable ones because of its elegant design and historical significance.

Even the intricate sculptures of its exteriors are a sight to beckon! One can’t help but think of the power of religion and talent of human beings to make and preserve something like this for hundreds of years.

PictureNext to the stained glass designs, my second favorite is this gigantic door’s details.

This cathedral has survived wars and the French revolution, but it’s tragic to think that the recent fire has caused significant damage. Even with the rebuilding pledges, it will definitely never be the same again.

Au revoir for now, Notre-Dame Cathedral. I’m hoping that you will rise up and shine as a beautiful place of worship someday.
